ENGINEERED;made from ply with top layer being finished wood, thickness of top layer varies from paper thickness to 1/4" most can be refinished,engineered floors handle moisture better than solid wood flooring can be glued or nailed and have warranty from 10 to 50 yrs most of what we install is engineered
SOLID; usually 1/2" or 3/4" thick prefinished or site finished, mostly nailed down but the 1/2" can be glued, requires plywood subfloor,if you have or have had any moisture problems don't use solid wood in florida,we have installed 5/16" solid wood with glue and every time it started to cup before we finished the install as it was pulling moisture from the air.
LAMINATE;there are many different styles and sizes,it all used to look fake, but now a lot off the laminates now closely resemble the real woods be they exotic,handscraped or individual boards, when buying laminate you do get what you pay for, normally the 99c laminates look cheap and are hard to work with so you save on the materials but it takes longer to install, but that said they don't scratch or mark as easy as wood
DOMESTIC; refers to woods grown in America, oak,maple,hickory,etc, while not the hardest woods they do hide a lot of the minor wear mark's [scratches, dents ,etc.] you'll see on the hardness scale there are a lot of woods harder than American red oak [the most popular wood in USA ] but nothing hides it as well
EXOTICS;woods from Brazil,Africa,far east ,etc, while up to 2-3 times harder they are very elegant looking floors and need a little respect if you have young children or big dogs,on looks alone these floors win hands down.
HANDSCRAPED/DISTRESSED;there were only a few manufacturers of this style a few years ago now its our biggest seller it was in the $15-20 sq ft range now it's FROM $6.50 sq ft,the wood has been distressed and scraped to simulate long time wear, the more you abuse it the better it looks
GREEN PRODUCTS;woods that are environmentally friendly, the come from replenished forests,some use bio degradable glues,stains ans urethane's in manufacturing
